Hatch is an employee-owned global engineering firm with a network of 9,000 professionals with experience spanning over 150 countries in the metals, energy, infrastructure, digital, and investments market sectors. They are passionately committed to the pursuit of a better world through positive change, and work closely with the communities in which they serve to ensure that the solutions to their client’s toughest challenges optimize environmental protection, economic prosperity, social justice, and cultural vibrancy.

In South Africa, Hatch supports meaningful social development and economic transformationby offering bursaries in the STEM field, funding institutions of higher learning and the promotion of improved education in maths and science. Further proof of their commitment to positive change is their consistent Level One BBBEE rating, and the successes achieved by their Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) programme graduates.

The ESD programme’s objectives are to develop qualifying small and medium black-owned businesses to an eventual graduation as successful independent enterprises. This is achieved through an incubation programme which is tailormade for each business, based on a comprehensive needs-analysis, and is designed to ensure all pre-determined milestones are met.

Hatch is proud to be partnering at this event with three of these enterprises.

The first is C3D Designs (C3D). Established in 2013,C3D is 100% black owned with75% youth ownership.

This team of young, ambitious and highly trained individuals has a combined 25 years of experience and a vision to simplify engineering through innovation.

They began by offering a reinforcement detailing and draughting service, but a need for higher accuracy led them to embrace laser scanning; the use of drones provided an aerial advantage and a gateway into photogrammetry reality modelling (BIM), allowing them to bring intelligence to structures.

C3D joined the Hatch ED programme in 2017 and successfully graduated to SD in October 2020.

Since their graduation, C3D is collaborating with Hatch on several key execution projects and has become a preferred supplier to Hatch of these service offerings, amongst others:

3D terrestrial laser scanning solutions

3D reality modeling

Management of scan data sets (Aviva LFM)

Another 100% black owned enterprise to graduate from the programme is Measurement Process Solutions (MPS).MPS was founded in 2013 by Tshepo Molefe, a Pr. Eng. who holds a BSc Chemical Engineering from the University of Cape Town (UCT). MPS’s mission is to provide core quality management solutions to the mining industry.

Tshepo’s experience spans over 18 years in both the mining and engineering consulting sectors, with sampling and laboratory design experience in commodities includingiron ore, manganese, potash and chrome. His production, technical, management and projects expertise were gained while working as an independent consultant and in various operational positions at businesses including De Beers and Kumba Iron Ore.

MPS’s sampling stations are ISO, Theory of Sampling and Metallurgical Accounting standards compliant, and they have designed sampling and laboratory projects with CAPEX exceeding R500 million and implemented R 120 million in sampling projects.

Core service offerings include:

Sampling stations design

Laboratory design

Laboratory equipment and instrument supply

MPS was one of the initial enterprises to be accepted into Hatch’s ESDprogramme and they successfully graduated in September 2020. During their time in the programme, MPS played a pivotal role in the successful implementation of key mining and metals execution projects. They have now expanded and entered intolong-term sustainable partnerships with Hatch and other consulting and engineering businesses.

Temo Process, a 100% black-ownedenterprise and a solutions provider to the minerals processing industry, was accepted into Hatch’s SD programme in 2018. Established in 2010 by Tumi Matsebedi, a Pr. Tech Eng.with a BSc (Hons) Metallurgy from the University of Pretoria, it’s focus is fines beneficiation in commodities including ferro-chrome, chromite, coal, and iron ore. This is achieved through a focus on emerging technologies resulting in increased efficiencies and a reduced total cost of ownership. The team consists of highly skilled metallurgists with extensive experience in fines beneficiation and a speciality in key technologies.

The case studies below show a proven track record in delivering turnkey projects in various mineral processing applications to industry by offering mineral processing technologies, process consumables and services.

Production of 15 000 tons per annum of ferrochrome to Glencore through integrated mineral processing solutions including design, construction, commissioning, and operation of modular plant.

Assistance to one of the largest chrome producing mining complexes to lower operating costs by reducing chrome in tails to below 10% against industry average of 20%.

A key focus is assisting clients toreduce their carbon footprint by reprocessing ultra fines that were traditionally discarded to slimes dams, resulting in loss of recoverable minerals and wasted water. Recently Temo Process embarked on feasibility studies to recover manganese and chrome, where preliminary results indicate a good business case.
